Effective yesterday (Monday), the Corner Pub [E. College, just east of Ace Hardware] has a revised menu (the one at the web site has not been updated as of this posting, but it should be soon).
UPDATE: Still not updated as of Wednesday AM. [Hope the CP is not paying much for its web service, as it is slow as mole-asses.] Call if you have questions about the new menu.
After it is finally updated, you can compare it to the previous menu, which is shown in the continuation.
One of the reasons a restaurant changes menus at least once a year is to incorporate price increases. Some items on this menu are $.50 - $1.00 higher.
The best deal is 1/2 price on plates on Monday. But, you must eat most of it on the premises (no 1/2 price on takeouts).
The rainbow trout is larger than the previous trout. It's now served with edamame succotash (which replaces lima beans with soy beans while keeping the corn). It's good, but to this old blogger with possibly clogged sinuses, the taste of the fish is overwhelmed by the taste of the spices applied to the surface. The almonds sprinkled over the old trout plate are now gone.
If you're really hungry, order the dual battered pork chops with sawmill gravy, served on a bed of collards and creamy grits. It's also a bit bland. Add some hot sauce to spice it up. You can eat it all, but you might want to take half a chop home for lunch the next day.
The "Que" (BBQ) is spicy enough already. This old blogger can only eat 1/2 of it at a time to avoid indigestion later, though it's very tasty. It's served with very good home-cooked cornbread and slaw.
The jerked wings (a $7.50 "Meandering") are also plenty spicy -- too spicy for me. But, many like them.
The triple decker ham/turkey/bacon/lettuce club sandwich, called the "Commitment," which is more than most need to eat at one sitting, has gone up to $9. Eat 3/4 of it and take the other 1/4 home for lunch the next day. (For a better value in a club, get the Trackside Club -- with your choice of 3 breads -- with fried okra for $5.50. It's great, when the bread is fresh.)
The $13 steak (with fries) is 6 ounces. You could almost pick it up with a tooth pick, like an hors d'oeuvre!
The $14 steak with mashed potatoes and green beans [the traditional Southern steak plate] has been dropped. If you want a serious steak and potatoes plate, drive to Longhorn in Toco Hills, or to Rathbun's Steak at Krog St if you have the bucks. Hopefully, the steakhouse to replace Micks will bring serious steaks to Decatur. Several Decatur restaurants offer steaks, but none of them are good values.
A new plate is Cajun sausage and grits.
The new top dog on the menu is a $15 Tuna, lightly seasoned and seared with fresh tomatoes and steamed broccoli. You can also get a tuna salad for $13, and a blackened Tuna sandwich for $11. Some think pregnant women should avoid Tuna due to the possible high levels of mercury, but others disagree. See the Wikipedia entry for details. If you're not pregnant, the benefits of eating fish probably outweigh the risks of mercury poisoning. To see where the Presidential candidates stand on this important issue, read this NYT article.
There are some minor price increases, but most are less than 50 cents.
You'll find CP coupons in the Savvy Shopper, a free coupon magazine you can pick up at various locations around town. For parties of two or more people, the coupons can save you some bucks.
The atmosphere at the Corner is alway relaxed (at least before 10PM, when I've been there). It's packed on Wednesday at 8PM for Trivia night and at 6PM on Friday for Happy Hour.
