Sun 25 JAN 04. Fox News. Last year, David Kay had confidently predicted weapons would be found. But after nine months of searching, he said Sunday: "I don't think they exist."
"It's an issue of the capabilities of one's intelligence service to collect valid, truthful information," Kay said on National Public Radio.
Kay reiterated his conclusion that Saddam had "a large number of WMD program-related activities."
Do we have to wait until a despot (with a demonstrated desire to expand his country's borders) has stockpiles of weapons to act? We almost waited too long with Hitler. If you've watched the History Channel specials re. German weapons development (or are well read on the subject via other sources), you know Gemany had an active nuclear weapons program as well as the most advanced rocket program in the world at the time (Russia and the US recruited as many of the German rocket scientists as they could). It was on the verge of mass producing a jet fighter which could dominate the skies. Had the war against Germany extended into the next year, we might be seeing Nazi SS guys with dogs on our streets today, instead of policemen. We resolved then to remain vigilant and nip these things in the bud.
The notion that Saddam was being scammed by program managers is an intriquing one. If he didn't know exactly what he had, we should not be surprised that the Bush Administration was possibly mistaken.
And, he said, there is evidence that Iraq was moving a steady stream of goods shipments to Syria, but it is difficult to determine whether the cargoes included weapons, in part because Syria has refused to cooperate in this part of the weapons investigation. (As mentioned in an earlier post, he told the TELEGRAPH he felt some WMD were hidden in Syria.)
This is giving me a headache. Think I'll just wait and see if the facts become clear in time. Remember, it was quite a few years before we found out the Lusitania was secretly carrying munitions.
