"AFRJacket" wins 2006 "Hive" Playoffs

"Buzzweiser" on the Hive ran a unscientific contest in the Water Cooler of the "Hive" (a Georgia Tech sports message board), starting with the top posters (in terms of all-time posts) along with some play-ins between nominated posters.

Voters were advised to make up their own criteria for selecting between pairs.

Congratulations to "AFRJacket," a very dedicated GT fan, for winning.

The "AFR" is for Air Force Reserve, for which he is the second-highest-ranking recruiter.

Hive changes subject, from Theo to AD selection

Soon after the announcement that Dave Braine was stepping down as AD, the Theo threads sank down the list as a plethora of AD threads were started.

Many names have been thrown out and debated. Among them, George O'Leary was deemed to have the best resume.  (That was intended as a joke by the poster, but stirred quite a hissy fit.)

Meanwhile, the catfight between Cracker Jacket and Allijacket in the Water Cooler was quelled, thankfully, since the other mods seem reluctant to censure another mod.

Theo is hopefully concentrating on his studies.

Most level-headed Hive post in days

The ankle-biting poodle Hive poster known as "33Jacket" had no sooner complimented the "mods" on keeping things pleasant when ALL HELL BROKE LOOSE following the bowl blowout. Coaches, players, and even equipment managers were attacked with a vengeance. The Hive hasn't been this ugly since the 51-7 rout by the Mutts.

The "mods" have been unable to stabilize things. Today, somebody posted blaming the season on our kicker. RR, the "Hive Father" (translation: I sold out, after saying it would stay independent for years, but I'm still in control) needs to post another "I'm only going to say this once" pinned post to get things back in control. He must be on vacation, or he would have already.

AlaGTech posted what's in the continuation around 5PM on New Year's Eve.  While I don't agree with every point, I concur in general.

Most of us agree Chan Gailey is a great person, along the lines of the Great Bobby Dodd. But, he's going to have to get us beyond the 7-game ceiling. Contrary to what Dave Braine said, GT can do better than 7 out of 12 (58%) ON AVERAGE, not just once in a while. If not, we should just shut down the football program and concentrate of golf, baseball, and basketball.

Based on this response, there are 28 Hivers known to be over 60 years of age, 4 of whom are over 70!  Seventeen (17) have posted more than 100 times.  Six have posted more than 1000 times.

A list of those in their 40s and 50s will be posted later.

Hive highlights (& lowlights) from Wed 8/17/05

Not much to report from the Hive for Wednesday. More lowlights than highlights, with a few gems in the pile, if you're willing to dig through it to find them. Brace yourselves. It will get WORSE between the time practice stops and the train slides past the Allbarn station.

20oz Bulldog hit a new low in asking an obvious question: "Why do some folks refer to Georgia as UGAG?"  This garnered over 2000 reads and 44 replies. It's amazing how many actually tried to explain it to him.

Second to that (at the bottom of the scale) was Palmettoson (a Clem's Son fan) posting "Not trying to flame, but your practice reports... yall are freakin ready to win an NC" This was read 2094 times and got 27 replies. Like somebody commented, anytime someone starts a statement with "Not trying to X," X is EXACTLY what they're trying to do.

These two inane discussions will no doubt rage on today.

The discusion about shaungt02's hive seating map for BDS was more about the models and whether they linked properly (no jokes, please) than the original function of the map. Seems we've lost our way in regards to the originally intended functionality and have added a bunch of unrelated and unneeded features which only add to complexity, confuse the user, and reduce reliability. Must be a government project -- possibly NASA.

By comparison, a serious discussion regarding whether GT is finally developing depth, introduced after six by ontheflats, was only read 324 times with two responses. Maybe it will do better today, given more time.  I'm inclined to agree with the sentiment that we are doing better, but we're nowhere close to teams like FSU and Miami -- and may never be.

GT Dean was 39 minutes late (according to the Hive clock, which is fast) in saving the day with his great audio clips of great GT plays, going back to Lee's run. Want to shake of the Hive sillies and get in the mood for some football? Listen to all of them!

Tuesday (8/16/05) on the Hive

The Hive was slow Tuesday (as is typical for August). Here are a few selected "takeaways" for the day.

The Wednesday scrimmage will be open to Club Seating ticket holders only. Afterwards, they will be treated to food & beverage tasting at the Heisman Club Lounge and hear Wes & Coach Gailey speak.

Gotta make 'em feel they got their money's worth for their $1500 PSL. Those dislocated from their LW seats when the gold seats were added are still madder than the Jews being evicted from the Gaza Strip by Israeli troops.

There was the usual discussion of articles. Besirevic (who has just switched to guard) in the ACC.com. A couple of MT articles. Chuck Smith on 790 listed GT as #8 on his Top 10 Defenses.

New weights have been posted. Some of these boys are GROWING.

A number of people posted they had received their season tickets -- or not. Others reported the location of their Allbarn seats. At last count, there were a handful of threads asking about ticket delivery or salivating about having received them already.

GTYJacketsFan911 praised Jake Blackwood, and a chorus joined in.

Joe Hamilton will have the color chair (you know what I mean!) for GT games on CSS this fall. Wes reportedly offered it to him based on his stated intention to come back and get his degree.

Pet Dawgs were the main discussion leaders (or should I say bait fishermen).  The discussion 20ozBulldog started yesterday re. further BDS expansion has now reeled in nearly 39 replies. 20oz is also doing well with the 3 biggest games in past 20 years query. 20oz. also wants to know how many games we're been to in a row. Sfalco made some point (I guess) re. recruiting rankings.

Tech fans also did their best to stimulate discussion. Jimbodad wondered if GT practiced hard enough. BeeProudBeeLoud pondered whether GT or the Mutts would be most hurt by the loss of their starting QB. Number44's best team we play? query has quite a few responses.

There were a few discussions about transferring players, and whether they were team players, prima donnas, or just optimizing their careers, and whether they were given a fair shot where they were. The Andy Hall thread was still going strong. A Clemson basketball player is transferring. Pat Carter's name came up.

Normjacket brought up an article re. Urban Meyer's more hands-on style. A interesting discussion as to how to best manage college players ensued.

Cmjkt wondered if we didn't have enough QBs already (based on the commitment of Byron Ingram as our 4th commit).

We determined that, beginning in 1995, entering Freshmen received a GT pin. Before that, they got the traditional "look to the right and left" warning. Another indication of how GT has changed.
