GT, UGA tied in two-sport rankings over 5 years

ESPN.com's Pat Forde went back and used Jeff Sagarin's ratings over a five-year period to rank the top 2-sport (football and basketball) teams.

GT and UGA are tied at #21.

[Pat Forde, ESPN, 12/21/06]

This has to come as a shock to the Mutts who want to believe GT is not in UGA's league.

Bobo promoted to UGA OC

Mike Bobo is now the Bulldogs' permanent play-caller and offensive coordinator.

"I knew the minute I said, 'Mike I want you to call this [Georgia] Tech game,' that it was probably the last time I was going to call a game in a long while," Richt said.

Bobo made the point clear that would still coach the quarterbacks.

Bobo, a former Georgia quarterback, was temporarily named the to call the team's plays prior to the regular-season finale against Tech. Georgia won that game 15-12 but scored only one offensive touchdown — in the fourth-quarter, on the longest drive of the season.

VPI and CU to battle the SEC in bowls

The SEC is widely regarded as the nation's top conference for football. The ACC, meanwhile, hasn't had its best season. Perennial powers Miami and Florida State each finished 6-6 in the regular season, and no ACC teams are ranked in the top 10. At No. 14, the Hokies (10-2) are the conference's highest-ranked team.

"I think everybody connected here has great respect for the SEC - I don't think there's any question about that - but I think we also feel like we got a great league in the ACC," Beamer said. "So I think representing the ACC in this situation, you just want to go play well.

Kendalls' 11/23/06 GT notes

Head coach Mark Richt has been noncommittal about playing Tereshinski... Along with being Georgia's sack leader, Hawkinsville native Charles Johnson has been credited with more pass breakups than any defensive lineman in the nation... Johnson is tied for seventh in the SEC with 6.5 sacks.

UGhA line has momentum

Heading into Saturday's 3:30 p.m. game against No. 16 Georgia Tech (9-2), the Bulldogs have given up the second-fewest sacks in the SEC (13) and are the sixth-best rushing team in the conference (136.5).

"We've had missed assignments, but I feel as the season progressed, we played better and better each game," Turner said. "It always feels nice when you play as a whole like that and you finally click. It's bad that it happened so late in the season."

Some UGhA fans expecting beating in last 2 games

Representative sample comment in an AJC UGhA sports blog:

By Dave In Tampa
November  4, 2006 04:26 PM | Link to this

We have now hit rock bottom! What a difference a year makes. Can’t believe that we are this bad with the past couple years of recruiting we have had. No excuse for this. I don’t look forward to playing our last 2 games. It will be ugly. Coaches and players need to take a long, hard look at themselves for a gut check. We do not deserve to be in a Bowl. I hope we don’t get in one. Why pro-long the agony of this season.

[AJC UGhA Sports Blog, 11/04/2006]

These blogs always have lots of junk posts from opponents, but some of them are rather harsh criticisms from seemingly real UGA fans.

But, anyone who has followed the GT/UGA rivalry for 50 years as I have knows upsets are common.

UGhA loses to Vandy

Georgia lost to Vanderbilt. On homecoming, no less. For the first time in 12 years and only the third in 26 games, the private little university that couldn't finally did. The Commodores, on a 32-yard field goal with 2 seconds to go, beat the team that had under Mark Richt been the beast of the SEC East 24-22 Saturday in front of 92,746 stunned fans.

The Dawgs can forget their SEC championship aspirations. They are now playing for a decent bowl game.

Dooley calls Adams re. athlete academics

University of Georgia  president Michael Adams' Monday editorial sparked another guest editorial, this one from ex AD Vince Dooley, who said in a telephone interview Thursday night that "some of Dr. Adams' facts are just wrong."

"Using his skills as a spin doctor is commendable. But Adams crossed the line when he said, "For some time, the philosophy at UGA was academic eligibility, not graduation."

Adams' guest column also stated that "the academic counseling function was moved from the athletic department and placed under the university's chief academic officer." That never was the case, nor is it the case today."

Adams admitted as much when shown a copy of Dooley's letter.

Thursday, Adams said he meant no offense to Dooley and was "sorry any offense was taken."

In 2003, Adams sparked a firestorm by refusing to extend Dooley's contract as athletics director, effectively ending a 41-year tenure at the school that included UGA's only national football championship.

Will UGhA eventually be known as women's college?

In 1975, only about a quarter of students in UGA's professional schools - law, pharmacy and veterinary medicine - were women; today women make up 70 percent of professional school enrollment.

In that same 30 years, women have overtaken men as a majority on campus and continue to widen that gender gap.

In fall 1975, 45 percent of all UGA students were women. By 1988, the number grew to almost 55 percent and by 2005 to 57 percent, generally following the national trend. [GT was 73% male.]

UGhA may have to try reverse gender discrimination, or they'll have a boy's team playing for a predominantly girl's school.

As WR reported earlier, UGhA is already introducing certain engineering degrees.

UGA basketball assistant reprimanded

[LINK] Georgia has barred an assistant men's basketball coach from working camps this summer, restricted him from off-campus recruiting during nine days of the July evaluation period and won't raise his salary this year because of NCAA secondary rules violations.

Mike Jones also received a letter of admonishment after the school reported that four incoming freshmen did not pay required commuter fees of $100 before taking part in a team camp on June 24-26, 2005. Two other recruits, including a 2006 football signee, attended camp as individuals, even though the camp was not publicized to include individual campers, according to documents received by the Athens Banner-Herald under Georgia Open Records law. The names of the players were redacted.

With eratic starters, UGA relies on bullpen

[LINK] M-T

USCe coach Ray Tanner thinks the key for Georgia to have success in this year's event is its somewhat erratic starting pitching. There certainly aren't any concerns about the bullpen.

"(Starters) don't have to throw scoreless innings," Tanner said. "They have to keep it close and turn it over to those guys, who are lights out."

That would be setup man Rip Warren and closer Joshua Fields. The seventh-seeded Bulldogs (47-21) start the College World Series today against second-seeded Rice (55-11) in a 2 p.m. game, and the biggest reason Georgia has confidence it can win the event is that relief duo.

"Well, not every time is lights out," Fields said, "but the Lord has blessed us this year with being pretty successful in the back of the bullpen."

The Bulldogs are 40-1 when leading after six innings and 40-0 when leading after seven this season. The reason is Warren and Fields, who have the lowest ERAs of any Georgia regulars in a combined 65 appearances.

It will be interesting to see if Georgia's bullpen can close the deal today (unlike Tech's yesterday).

USCe gets 5 HRs on UGA in 3 innings

Amazing display of 5 HRs puts UGA down 9-0.

Can they climb out? They've come back from being 9 down before.

UPDATE: USCe hits SEVENTH home run in the 5th. It's now 12-1.

Answer to above question: Seriously doubt it. It would take a minor miracle at this point.

What has happened to the Georgia pitching? They are serving up easy balls over the plate like its batting practice or a home run derby. And the Cocks are only to happy to knock them out of the park.

Bet Perno is wishing the NCAA allowed the mercy rule at this point. This is demoralizing for the Mutts.

Will have to TIVO it at this point, as it's past time to head to RCS to see the GT game.

Pepperdine upsets UGA in tennis championship game

[LINK] Dodgy at Best

Sorry about that, Georgia fans.

Most Tech fans wouldn't begrudge UGA NCs, if UGA didn't make such a big deal about how many more they win.

GT has (arguably, if you're a UGA fan) more football NCs, but no other NCs. (We've come very close in golf, baseball, and basketball.) UGA has a lot of them -- several in the past calendar year. The Mutts are almost always in the hunt for the Sears Cup (whatever it's called now). It's undoubtably one of the nation's top sports programs, across the board. As a native Georgian, I'm broad of our state's "flagship" university. But, in the 16 sports we both have, I have to be cognizant of the "zero-sum" theory.  In those sports, whatever is good for UGA is usually bad for GT.

Putting things in perspective, UGA has twice as many sports and a much larger budget (by virtue of being a much larger school).

Alouettes release Quincy Carter

[LINK] Yahoo News

Former NFL quarterback Quincy Carter was released by the Canadian Football League's Montreal Alouettes on Wednesday, less than a week into training camp.

Montreal coach Don Matthews said Carter's release was based on performance.

"Someone had to go," Matthews said. "He was the obvious choice. He had the lowest grades."

Quincy's reaction:

"This is a joke ... an insult," Carter told the Montreal Gazette.

No doubt it's hard for a guy who once started for the Dallas Cowboys to take.

Dogs lose opener

[LINK] AJC

Hoover, Ala. — Georgia's Southeastern Conference tournament woes continue.

Despite all their success in baseball — five SEC championships, one national title — the Bulldogs just can't seem to figure out the conference tournament. That trend continued Wednesday as they lost their first-round game to Vanderbilt 9-4 at Hoover Metropolitan Stadium.

The third-seeded Bulldogs (38-18) drop into the losers bracket in the double-elimination event. Georgia will face No. 2 seed Kentucky (42-14) at 11 a.m. Thursday.

This is important to Tech because it increases Tech's chances of hosting a super regional, vs. playing in Athens if it wins in Atlanta.

Quincy Carter gets fresh start in Canada

[LINK] KFFL

Jean-Jacques Taylor, of the Dallas Morning News, reports former Dallas Cowboys QB Quincy Carter said that marijuana use played a role in his abrupt release from the team before the 2004 season. As noted earlier, Carter signed with the Montreal Allouettes of the CFL Tuesday, April 4. "I made a mistake in the past. That mistake was for marijuana. I'm excited about getting a fresh start with Montreal and I want to put the things in the past behind me," Carter said. "When you walk around and people think you're on cocaine or bipolar, it hurts. None of that was the case."

Hope he's really clean and this works out for him.

Falcons give Shockley late call

The Atlanta Falcons picked UGA's D.J. Shockley 223rd overall in Sunday's seventh, and final, round.

Shockley, who spent three years in college waiting to start, will start his pro career by doing the same. Only this time, if he beats out Bryan Randall for the third quarterback spot behind Michael Vick and Matt Schaub, Shockley will get paid to wait.

Seven Bulldogs were selected, but none in the first round (the first was 62nd).

Of SEC teams, UGA plays out-of-region least

[LINK] The House that Rock Built [ND blog]

An interesting analysis, using this methodology:

I took the twelve member teams of the SEC and flipped backwards through their schedules, not stopping until I found three road games that they have played that were outside of the states with SEC schools in them (AL, AR, FL, TN, KY, SC, GA, MS, LA, specifically). The table below shows how many games each team played in their home state in the duration it took them to accumulate three out-of-region road games. [He also didn't count games in NC and Hawaii.]

Georgia was most "xenophobic" in the SEC, using this methodology.

Apparently conceding the direct point, "Dawgnoxious" at the Georgia Sports Blog obliguely countered with the argument "
leaving your region is not a pre-requisite to tough scheduling," linking to the Data Warehouse ranking of toughest schedules, all time. In that ranking, UGA is 2nd, while ND is 4th. (GT, incidentally, is 6th.)

Since the Dawg obviously accepts the College Football Data Warehouse as a reliable reference, I assume he accepts the fact GT is ranked higher than UGA (11th vs. 12th) in total points, ranking Tech as the better program all-time.

Mutt fan wonders if his AA is greedy and stingy

[LINK] Bill King, the Junkyard Blawg (see comments)

On the one hand, UGA’s $23.9 million profit, beating out runner-up Michigan’s $17.1 million, inspires a certain amount of pride. It indicates not only that the Bulldog athletic program has A LOT of support, but also that Damon Evans (following Vince Dooley’s example) is doing a good job of managing the program’s finances.

But then I think about that check I wrote to athletic department a couple of weeks ago, the required donation in order to get the right to buy season football tickets. The main reason cited for an increase in operating revenues of almost $11 million over the year before was the new donation system that brought in $22.5 million, up from $15.9 million.

As was the case with many other fans, my required donation MORE THAN DOUBLED last year when the new system went into effect. And the result is a record profit? You know how it feels to pay nearly $3 a gallon for gas and then read that the oil companies have seen their profits soar? This is one national championship Evans probably would have preferred not to publicize.

ATHENS -- The University of Georgia Athletic Department is preparing to petition the sports blog EverydayShouldBeSaturday in an effort to have One (1) Fulmer Cup Point removed from the current standings.  According to published reports in the Athens Banner Herald, the charge of driving with a suspended license against defensive tackle Marquis Elmore was dismissed on Thursday because a warrant had not been properly served.

As it stands, mUttGA is tied for fifth.

In an earlier post, the blogger "Paul Westerdawg" noted his personal experience and suggested the most profitable AA in the country [$53M/yr net according to a recent report] should be able to afford a "DMV liason" staff position, considering each football player costs UGetA about $100K/year, using full cost accounting (let's not go there).
