Wednesday was Nix's first appearance in front of the media since
head coach Chan Gailey gave him offensive autonomy following spring
practice.
The 34-year-old former Auburn quarterback served as offensive
coordinator for the last two seasons, but Gailey retained playcalling
responsibilities. Gailey, however, handed over control of the offense
during spring practice and announced the change at the end of drills.
"There is a definate change for me," Nix said. "I'm working with the
same players and with the same team, yes. But I gave suggestions
before. Now I have to make decisions. It's a huge change."
Georgia Tech's Kristi Miller, winner of the Honda Award for women's
tennis and the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's National Player to
Watch, and Miami's Audra Cohen, the ITA National Player of the Year,
both earned spots on the team.
The ACC's Player and Pitcher of the Year and Freshman of the Year are
among those honored on the inaugural All-Atlantic Coast Conference
Academic Softball Team, as announced Wednesday by Commissioner John D.
Swofford. All eight league schools that sponsor softball are
represented on the team.
Georgia Tech was second in the league with five student-athletes
earning spots on the All-ACC Academic Team, including 2006 Freshman of
the Year Whitney Haller.
Georgia has barred an assistant men's basketball coach from working
camps this summer, restricted him from off-campus recruiting during
nine days of the July evaluation period and won't raise his salary this
year because of NCAA secondary rules violations.
Mike
Jones also received a letter of admonishment after the school reported
that four incoming freshmen did not pay required commuter fees of $100
before taking part in a team camp on June 24-26, 2005. Two other
recruits, including a 2006 football signee, attended camp as
individuals, even though the camp was not publicized to include
individual campers, according to documents received by the Athens
Banner-Herald under Georgia Open Records law. The names of the players
were redacted.
Nix, who represented Georgia Tech at Wednesday's annual preseason media
gathering for the state's college football coaches at the Georgia
Sports Hall of Fame [in Macon], says he is excited about his long-awaited
opportunity to call the plays for the Yellow Jackets this season.
Patrick Nix carried the
title of offensive coordinator the past two seasons at Georgia Tech,
but other than calling plays as the team was in hurry-up mode, the
offense belonged to head coach Chan Gailey. This season, all
play-calling duties will be handled by Nix, who's in his fifth season
at Tech. In an interview with The Journal-Constitution, Nix said he
feels more empowered now.
Georgia Tech's Homecoming football game against
Miami on Oct. 28, 2006, is sold out, Director of Athletics Dan
Radakovich announced Thursday.
"With the Miami game selected by the Alumni Association as
Homecoming, tickets have been on sale since February," said Radakovich.
"That, combined with our increased season ticket sales and the
tremendous response to our exclusive flex-pack offering to our season
ticket base, has made this our first sell-out."
Three-game flex packs are still available and will go on sale to the general public on July 1, on-line at www.ramblinwreck.com
Georgia Tech's Roberto Castro
captured one point for the United States with a singles victory, but
Europe dominated the first day of the 2006 Palmer Cup by winning six of
eight singles matches after sweeping the morning four-ball session for
a 10-2 advantage.
