Jew here,
I hated to see Oz Pizza go. I'm sure a lot of you would debate this, but the closest thing to NY pizza in GA was Oz Pizza - it was the best in town. I think they are still around in East Point. I think they left Decatur because there was too much pizza competition, especially when Fellinis opened. Who knows, who cares, I would have still ordered a slice and a brew at Oz.
I always worry about who would be the "replacement." No need to worry, 5th Earl is here. I was shocked to see what they did to the space. Oz was grungy in a good way, while 5th Earl fixed it up nicely and added a flat screen and a small bar in the back - nice touch!
This is a gourmet sandwich, salad and soup place. There is also a small "mart" where you can buy a wedge of cheese and get it to go. You order at the counter (or at the small bar) and they will bring you your food. I had a hard time choosing which sandwich or salad to order. I finally decided (my friend decided since we were splitting a sandwich) on the Viggiano. This is a hot sandwich consisting of grilled chicken, avocado, melted Asiago cheese and roasted tomato vinaigrette - all on a hoagie roll. It was delicious. I've had that twice now. They also had a soup special one cold night - hot and sour - it, too, was yummy and perfect for the chilly evening. The sandwiches come w/a little side of orzo tossed in a vinaigrette - nice extra that is FREE with the sandwich.
Prices are the usual "gourmet" prices. Sandwiches range from $6.50 (BLT) to $8.50 (Cuban) and salads go up to $8.00. I've also read that they have regular beer &/or cheese dinners which I am anxious to check out if I am ever consistently in town.
They also have a good beer selection. I don't know where else to find TommyKnocker beers. They have the bottles here-I think I tried them all.
This replacement works-check them out.
