NOW! Innovations will kick up a mobile parking service in Decatur on October 20, weekly Eesti Ekspress writes.
In cooperation with US company Streetsmart Technology the company offers an option which is unique in the world.
It’s possible to pay with cell phone by calling and following automatic orders. Information about payment will immediately get to parking meter, which will start just as if you were paying with coins. In asphalt under parking places are detectors, which are linked with parking meter and all parking place guards will receive that information in real time to control whether you have paid for parking.
At first nearly 100 parking places are in the system [per Lyn's comment, 54 are installed now].
Why are we reading about this first in an Estonian paper?
We knew the detectors could reset the meters as soon as a car pulled out, so the next car couldn't get some free minutes, but this is news to me. Did I miss the announcement?
UPDATE: Lyn, who works for the City, gives us the skinny in a comment.
