City of Decatur and Decatur Tourism Bureau launch new websites tomorrow

The City of Decatur will launch its re-developed, re-designed website Tuesday, February 1.  In conjunction with that release, the Decatur Tourism Bureau will unveil its brand new site specifically designed for visitors and tourists.  I have attached a press release with details and I am also copying it into the body of this email in case you are unable to open the attachment.

We do not have a definite time the website will go live but wanted you to know it was coming.  Feel free to call or email me if you have questions or need more information.  My direct line is 678-553-6512.

Decatur Farm to School dine-out tonight

The second annual Farm to School Dine Out is set for Monday, January 31st,, 2011!  This is a great night to bring the whole family out to dinner, or grab your friends for dinner to promote healthy foods in our schools.  Participating restaurants are Farm Burger, Iberian Pig, Watershed, Cakes & Ale, Brick Store Pub, Leon’s Full Service, Universal Joint, Steinbeck’s Ale House and Farmstead 303.  So come out, support our schools and enjoy Decatur’s restaurants!

The Farm to School Dine Out hopes to create more awareness of ongoing efforts, raise money and encourage parents and students to participate in the school lunch program.  Each restaurant will have a unique "Farm to School" menu or menu options and will donate 10% of sales to Decatur Farm to School.

The 2010 Farm to School Dine Out was a huge success and raised nearly $3,000 to help put healthy foods in the Decatur schools.   The funds were used to purchase kitchen equipment and knives for the employees to make some food items from scratch and helped to fund training and school gardens.

After almost a full year of collaboration — collecting ideas, weighing trade-offs, measuring applicability to city goals, and evaluating feasibility — a decade’s worth of proposed Strategic Plan projects is now ready for community review. And, as came up frequently during Decatur Next meetings and has been discussed informally around town, a circulating shuttle is among those proposed.

Burnt Fork BBQ soft opening today

Decatur is all-a-twitter about Burnt Fork BBQ. There are mixed reviews, some of which say its great, while another says its not as good as Community BBQ, but is more convenient to downtown.

The TASTE section of the Jan 27th to Feb 2nd references InDecatur in providing a update on Trackside:

Per Doc Al on Friday,  the buildout by Jeremy is going great and looks great. The revised opening date will more likely be late March or early April.  City of Decatur permits can delay things.

DeKalb solicitor charge with DUI

A DeKalb County solicitor fled from officers and was so intoxicated that he couldn’t answer questions or maintain his balance, according to a police report obtained by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Wystan Getz, an assistant solicitor, remains on unpaid administrative leave while the solicitor-general conducts an internal investigation.

Getz is charged with DUI, fleeing and eluding, operating an unsafe vehicle and reckless driving.

A DeKalb Police report shows an officer attempted to stop Getz’s 2011 Volvo SUV around 3:30 a.m. Saturday after witnessing him driving on Moreland Avenue with two flat tires.

I won't get into the details of this individual's  relationship to Decatur.

When you are impaired to the point of putting yourself and others at risk, ask a friend to drive you home, or call a cab people. Don't let friends drive drunk.
