They died for our freedom

The Flame of Freedom needs additions for both Gulf Wars, the Afghanistan war (where a thousand have died already), and miscellaneous missions, such as the Dominican Republic. Some have died in training on posts, without ever actually being in combat.

Please remember freedom is not free, and many have paid the ultimate price for our freedom.

One of the heavy responsibilities of the President is when and where to send in troops. It's up to him to justify the risk of American lives. The troops cannot elect where they serve. The Congress sometimes declares war, sometimes passes approving resolutions, eg. the Gulf of Tonkin resolution, and sometimes merely condones the President's actions by agreeing to fund them. In any case, servicemen are sworn to follow the orders of the Commander and Chief.  

Today is not about arguing the appropriateness of military force. It is about honoring those who paid the ultimate sacrifice.

Last Blue Sky Concert sizzled

Douglas Brake and his Sizzle Hiss Pop Band wound up the Blue Sky Concerts Wednesday to a good crowd.

Only those to the northeast of the bandstand are shown here. The kids enjoyed bouncing around to the music.

 

Emory's Wesley Woods and DeKalb partner to protect abused elederly

Officials from Wesley Woods Center of Emory University and the Office of the DeKalb County Solicitor-General today officially formed a first of its kind partnership to identify and protect elderly abused citizens within DeKalb County.

Decatur Arts Festival

The Decatur Arts Festival is really a collection of events.  The most noticeable is the artists market on and near the Square. But, there are a number of others, as listed at the right in the image below.

The Decatur Arts Festival has an excellent 40 page free pamphlet you can pick up at most events, and an easily navigated website. You can also follow DAF on Twiter and Facebook.

Congratulations to Angie Macon, Executive Director, Elizabeth Malone, Assistent Director, and all involved in the planning and organizing of these events.

Let's just hope the rain doesn't dampen things too much.

Kids and Teens Art Festival Saturday

The Kids and Teens Art Festival kicks off with a resident parade starting at the corner of Church and Commerce. Participants are encouraged to decorate their strollers an bikes, or just themselves.

The festival is from 10 to 2 at Scott Park at 231 Sycamore St.
