I felt extremely honored to meet Max Cleland at the press conference at the Brick Store and to especially honored when he sat next to me at the Decatur Library to be honored as one of the 25 authors/poets on the 2010 Georgia Center of the Book list of 25 Books all Georgians should read, for his Heart of a Patriot book.

Max is three years older than me. We were both Captains in the Army. His horrible accident occurred just months before I went on active duty. We don't agree politically, but I have the utmost respect for his military service and sacrifice.  And, he's just a very nice guy.

I'm still flabbergasted when people tell me the name of my umbrella Typepad website, Airborne Combat Engineer, offends them or might offend others. All Max, myself, and many others tried to do was defend the peaceful way of life all Americans enjoy. We can debate whether specific US missions or wars were/are justified, but anyone who believes we don't need a strong military is just dreaming.

Hello Liberal Drinkers!

Drinking Liberally meets tonight from 8pm until 10 or 11pm. Join us for friendly conversation about the latest political happenings. We are an informal gathering of friends with little structure with regards to conversation topic. Just be ready to enjoy some good food and drinks. Also, it is a pub, so 21+ after 9pm please. And though there is no “cover” to get in, it is our neighborhood bar and they have supported us for years, so please indulge!

Decatur Beach Party June 18^th

Celebrating 25 Years of Fun in the Sun!

Celebrate the beginning of summer at the annual Decatur Beach Party Friday, June 18, 2010 from 5 p.m. until midnight.  Decatur brings in 60 tons of sand and turns its landlocked square into the Decatur Beach complete with a kid’s boardwalk, live music, dancing, food court, and more. This year the Beach Party celebrates its 25^th year!

 

Attendees can start with a visit to “Decatur Beach” set up on Ponce de Leon Avenue with 60 tons of sand and plenty of sand toys.  The expanded Kid’s Boardwalk Area – “Ponce Fun Pier” – will be set up on Ponce de Leon Avenue next to the sand.  Also available for the children are sand buckets filled with a box supper and toy for $5.

 

On the Community Bandstand on the Square The Reputations will play beach music and more from 5 – 8 p.m.  Then at 8 p.m. Terry Lee and the G.T.’s will play live from the mainstage on the MARTA Plaza.  Beachgoers can enjoy “Dancing on the Plaza” until midnight.

 

The Food Court will be set up on E. Court Square between the beach/boardwalk area and the main stage.  Enjoy a variety of beach fare such as hamburgers, hot dogs, funnel cakes, beer, wine and soft drinks. No outside food or beverages are allowed into the festival area.

 

Tickets are $6.50 in advance at www.decaturdba.com or $10 at the gate.  Children 12 and under are free, limit 2 per paying adult.  Kid’s Boardwalk tickets will be for sale inside the event.  For more information visit www.decaturdba.com or call 678-553-6573.

 

The Decatur Business Association produces the Decatur Beach Party.  The event is an annual fundraiser and proceeds help fund their other free events including the Easter Egg Hunt, Concerts on the Square, Blue Sky Concerts, and the Bonfire/Marshmallow Roast.  The proceeds are also used for projects that benefit the entire community such as the new Wayfinding Kiosk signs on and around the square.

Another gas leak in Decatur

Capt. Scott Richards said a stretch of South Candler was closed between Kirk Road and Broward Street. Police also closed Midway Road near its intersection with South Candler.

Richards said construction workers hit a gas line in the right-of-way, causing the leak.

On Twitter at 10:46 a.m., @WriterChad reported: "gas line break on S. Candler St. in #decaturga wife spoke with authorities, threat contained"

Why does this happen so often, when Atlanta Gas Light will come mark the lines for free? Perhaps there should be a fine.
