Some NYE celebration alternatives in/near Decatur

If you haven't yet decided where you'll bring in the new year (and new decade to some), here are but a few possibilities:

Arizona Pub (Kirkwood/Edgewood)

This is a good place to start, It's only about three miles down DeKalb Ave. toward the big city from the western City of Decatur line. I hear many Trackside refugees will gather here. See the Facebook event page for details.

Brockett Pub (Clarkston)

This is about the same distance east of Decatur. Special drinks will be served on NYE, with complimentary champagne at midnight. A good luck meal will be served Friday.

PLEASE BE CAREFUL

You can get arrested, get hurt, or (worst of all) hurt/kill somebody. If possible, walk or take a cab, rail, or bus. It's wise to celebrate last in walking distance from home. If you're driving, please use a designated driver.

We want to see all our friends again next year, and not in jail. And remember, many amateur drinkers will be drinking much more heavily than usual tonight.

ICMA study focuses on Decatur

Dan Magee, Active Living Director, forwarded a link to an ICMA study [pdf] which should make Decatur residents proud.

Opening paragraph:

The city of Decatur, Georgia, has emerged as a

national leader in promoting active living as an essential

building block of a sustainable community. After

more than a quarter century of policy making and of

programs designed to strengthen community connections

and revitalize its downtown, the city has become

a place where people enjoy getting around on foot,

whether they’re going to work, shopping, or attending

a special event in the square. It’s a place where some

fourth- and fifth-graders regularly ride their bikes a

mile to get to school, while many younger kids walk

to school with a parent who’s leading a “walking

school bus” from the neighborhood. And it’s a place

where residents and visitors get the kind of routine

physical activity that public health experts say is critical

to arrest the nation’s obesity epidemic and address

related serious health problems such as diabetes.

Perhaps this would be a good tradition for all Decatur merchants. Downtown Development could promote it like Terrific Thursdays.

Rare Blue Moon on NYE

Most months have only one full Moon. The 29.5-day cadence of the lunar cycle matches up almost perfectly with the 28- to 31-day length of calendar months. Indeed, the word "month" comes from "Moon." Occasionally, however, the one-to-one correspondence breaks down when two full Moons squeeze into a single month. Dec. 2009 is such a month. The first full Moon appeared on Dec. 2nd; the second, a "Blue Moon," will come on Dec. 31st.

The modern astronomical Blue Moon occurs in some month every 2.5 years, on average. A Blue Moon falling precisely on Dec. 31st, however, is much more unusual. The last time it happened was in 1990, and the next time won't be until 2028.

Kill two birds with one stone at the DeKalb Courthouse

This seems to be a day of cliches in Georgia. 

First, the wisdom of "don't upset the apple cart" was dramatically violated as a truck carrying 45K lbs. of Washington Apples rolled on its side turning from I-285 to Ga Hwy 78. [See earlier post.] Then, a young entrepreneur in Athens shot himself in the foot (which he'll probably lose) as he pulled a shotgun from his jeans as he prepared to rob a convenience store in Athens. [See CBS News, or about any metro ATL news source.]

Now, we have an image from @RustyTanton on Twitter showing one can apply for a marriage license and a gun permit by passing down the same hall in the DeKalb County Courthouse (which now dominates the Decatur skyline). [I'd seen this before, but it gives me a chuckle every time I see it..]

If you're going to get married, you're going to need a gun, for some reason, sooner or later. Trust the experience of over six decades of living on this.

 

Whit's End featured on CBS 46 tonight

Jeff alerts us to an upcoming news piece dealing with the unfortunate closing of a menswear store which supported DHS sports and many Decatur events.

Click on the video in the upper right on the CBS 46 homepage to see it. 

Here's hoping the co-owners of this shop make a fast jump to their next income earning endeavors, as they continue to be the great people they are (which is even more important).

Contra Surprise Birthday Party
Saturday, Jan. 2nd @ 
Clarkston Community Center - 3701 College Ave, Clarkston, GA 30021

This celebration is a hybrid event.  In the first part (7:00-8:15 pm), a Cajun band, Atlanta Swamp Opera, will be playing just for the fun of it and to party with friends. We make our entrance at 8:15 and play about 30-45 minutes. After we wow the birthday boy, the evening continues with a contra dance, a public event put on by the non-profit Chattahoochee Country Dancers. Any band member who wishes to stay for the contra dance will have to pay the $10 admission, as that part’s a CCD event. The Clarkston Community Center is approximately 15 minutes east of Decatur.

If you didn't see this group in Oakhurst this year, and if you've never seen them anywhere around metro Atlanta, you should drive over and check it out. They're a hoot.
