On 10/29/2009, Decatur EDtv held a forum of candidates for the Decatur School Board. It was very well conducted, but unfortunately not well attended. (The Oakhurst District 2 debate was packed.)
Decatur EDtv may present a video of the entire proceeding, as well as questions presented which were not answered due to time constraints. [As of this posting, I see no coverage of the forum there, other than announcing it and a feature on Valarie Wilson.]
In the meantime, here are videos which include the opening and closing comments for the candidates in the two contested races. (Sorry they are a bit shaky, but it's hard to hold a camera steady for very long. The inDECATUR cameraman should have brought a tripod.)
You are also encouraged to study the websites of the candidates. But nothing beats seeing their faces as they speak their words.
I apologize for not getting these published yesterday, as intended, but I was plagued by technical difficulties.
While you can watch the embeds, the videos are best viewed at the links below them. You can even expand them to full screen if you like and your equipment can handle it.
This video contains the opening statements for Rob P vs. Valarie W (both of whom are a bit long-winded). Their closing comments are in the next video further down (Vimeo apparently just crops videos which are longer than they allow.)
It's interesting to compare how they feel about SAT scores, which have been trending downward for five years (see spreadsheet (developed by Garrett) in this earlier post if you can't read it in the video).
Debates between the two pairs of candidates going head to head against each other for the Decatur School Board were held at Westchester last evening.
Garrett Goebel debated Marc Wisniewski for the District 1 position. Rob Pope debated Valarie Wilson. Bernadette Seals, who is running unopposed, make statements and answered questions from the audience.
EDtv "filmed" it all. An inDECATUR staff member (the only one at this time) "filmed" the opening and closing comments, and will publish a video collage of that if the EDtv version doesn't come out today.
The Q&A will be summarized later today or tomorrow, IF the full video is not out yet.
In September I got a note from a friend in Spartanburg about the death of Ann Lewis who taught Senior English at Decatur when we were there . She had gone on to teach at Winthrop and for the last several years had lived in a nursing home in Spartanburg near her siblings. She was about ninety four when she died . Many of us may have memories of her classes.
Peggy Gladding Smith
Miss Lewis was a very attractive and classy person back when I took English in her class in the North Building in 1963. She would sometimes distract us boys by sitting on the front of her desk, talking in her soft voice.
Wayne Dunn, Class of '60, passed on 10/18.
Jene sharp black, Class of '53, is seriously ill with pneumonia and a kidney infection. She is at UAB hospital.
In the video embedded in the previous post, Vince Flynn gave his opening comments to the largest crowd ever assembled in the seven-year history of the independent Eagle Eye bookstore just north of Decatur, GA.
In this video (best viewed at the link below), he answers some questions from the crowd.
The video coverage of Vince Flynn at the Eagle Eye Bookstore had to broken into two roughly 12-minute videos, due to service limitations. This first part contains Vince's opening comments. The second part contains his answers to some questions. It will be uploaded and embedded once problems with the flaky Decatur WiFi are resolved. Both are roughly a dozen minutes long.
Vince Flynn, author of 'Extreme Measures" (#1 on the NYT Bestseller list) will speak about his new book 'Pursuit of Honor" at the Eagle Eye Bookstore at 6 p.m. You'd better get there early. You might need to park across the street.
