Anne Frank exhibit may find permanent home in Sandy Springs

A 600-photograph, 8,000-word exhibition about Anne Frank will move to Sandy Springs later this year, but for now, it’s still on display at the DeKalb History Center in the Old Courthouse in Decatur.

More than 150,000 people have already seen the exhibit, “Anne Frank in the World: 1929-1945.” It was on display for three years in Kennesaw, and will finish a three-year run in Decatur in December. It will move next — perhaps permanently — to a space in the Parkside Shopping Center on Roswell Road, just north of I-285.

The move toward healthier food

Tiffany McHale, who is involved in the Decatur Farm to School program, forward a good Time article.

"Since 1935, consolidation and industrialization have seen the number of U.S. farms decline from 6.8 million to fewer than 2 million — with the average farmer now feeding 129 Americans, compared with 19 people in 1940.

It's that very efficiency that's led to the problems and is in turn spurring a backlash, reflected not just in the growth of farmers' markets or the growing involvement of big corporations in organics but also in the local-food movement, in which restaurants and large catering services buy from suppliers in their areas, thereby improving freshness, supporting small-scale agriculture and reducing the so-called food miles between field and plate. That in turn slashes transportation costs and reduces the industry's carbon footprint."

Storybook Look: Illustrations by Southern Artists

It's the perfect way to start your exploration of the third annual Decatur Book Festival: come by The Art Institute of Atlanta-Decatur on Friday evening, September 4, from 5 to 8 pm for the opening reception of "Storybook Look: Illustrations by Southern Artists." The exhibit and the reception are open to the public at no charge - and it's perfect for the whole family.
 
"Storybook Look: Illustrations by Southern Artists" features original artwork from ten of the South's most notable children's book illustrators. The exhibit includes 28 paintings, photographs, and cut-paper/mixed media. It also includes text panels and copies of the books that feature the work shown in the exhibit. All featured artists in "Storybook Look" are traditionally-published members of the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators, the world's largest organization for children's book creators.
 
The exhibit will be on view in The Art Institute of Atlanta-Decatur Gallery, One West Court Square, Suite 110, Decatur, GA 30030, from September 4 through 30. Passion for Fashion Competition

Recognition is a beautiful thing…and so is an exciting future in the fashion industry. You can find both at The Art Institutes Passion for Fashion Competition 2010. Now open for entries, this competition challenges high school seniors to create the best original design in two categories: fashion design and fashion marketing, merchandising or retail management. The excellent part? Two grand prize winners will have the opportunity to earn a full tuition scholarship to study fashion at an Art Institutes school, as well as tour Seventeen magazine’s offices, have lunch with a style pro, indulge in a $500 shopping spree, attend New York City Fashion Week — and blog about the experience on Seventeen.com.

Deadline
All complete entries must be received by Nov. 20, 2009 at The Art Institutes school at which you plan to enter the Competition and attend following it. A local winner will be selected from each participating school whose design will go on to represent it in the national competition. Local winners will be selected in December 2009; national winners will be announced in January 2010.

Michael Pollen does not support Whole Foods boycott

Michael Pollen, who has been pivotal in the resurgence of local, organic food He was the keynote speaker at the Georgia organzics Conference and Trade Show in Decatur in late March [see inDECATUR post]. He does not support a boycott of Whole Foods based on the founder's views on health care.

From Omnivore Atlanta:

"When health insurers realize they will make thousands more in profits for every case of type II diabetes they can prevent, they will develop a strong interest in things like corn subsidies, local food systems, farmer’s markets, school lunch, public health campaigns about soda, etc. So Mackey is wrong on health care, but Whole Foods is often right about food, and their support for the farmers matters more to me than the political views of their founder. I haven’t examined the political views of all the retailers who feed me, but I can imagine having a lot of eating problems if I make them a litmus test."

Dan Magree mentioned some were working at the garden off Candler south of campus yesterday morning. Steve V said some were working at the cemetery. Others may have been other places.

DHS 9th graders clean up cemetery

From Mr. Chris Billingsley yesterday:

Over twenty 9th grade students from Decatur High School participated in a service project today at the cemetery from 9:00 until 12:00 Saturday. They did a great job cleaning up the eastern boundary of the cemetery and at the 100 year old magnolia near Mary Latimer's (Georgia temperance and suffrage leader) gravesite.  Of course, lunch was the highlight of the day for most of the students but I hope they remember that their hard work today honors the memory of many great and not so great citizens of Decatur from our past.  Students who participated in today's service project are trying to raise money for an end of the year donation to a local charity.
