A reader e-mailed asking me this yesterday, but since I got my permit in Hart County, where my lake house is, I didn't know the details for DeKalb County.
"G" posted a comment at Decatur Metro (in a thread he's now closed, because it became so headed) providing the information, and some information on what personal defense firearm you should select once you get it, and where you can buy them locally:
First off: If you're not mentally prepared to pump hot lead into somebody's body, see blood, hear them expressing pain, seeing them fall, and possibly seeing their eyes roll back (and many are not), don't bother buying a gun. You're better off with a stun gun, pepper spray, or just calling 911 and hoping they arrive in time (as another commenter said: "When seconds count, the cops will be there in a moment."
I'd recommend a 38 revolver for anyone who has never handled a gun, with the cylinder position which will rotate in position when the hammer is first cocked left empty. That avoids an accidental discharge, at the cost of only one click (a fraction of a second) and one less round of capacity.
Glock semi-autos are great for those (like Jack B on 24) who need to draw and fire rapidly, but having the safety built into the trigger makes them very easy to fire accidentally, possibly shooting your leg or other useful equipment if your a male. If you buy one of them, I'd suggest leaving the chamber empty. This will require pulling back the slide before the first shot, but it's a small price to pay for avoiding an accident. Remember the cop who accidentally fired his Glock into the floor while he was telling a class full of kids he was te only person in the room who had adequate training to handle one?
And ladies, please don't carry your firearms in your bag, so you have to dig for them like some of you dig for your keys. That's dangerous for you and others, and gives the perp time to tackle you, empty your bag on the pavement, pick up your gun, and use it against you.
