HUNTSVILLE, AL -- Decatur police today arrested an 18-year-old they believe was shot by a 68-year-old woman who fired at an intruder.
Police said the woman heard a commotion at the back of her house in the 400 block of Memorial Drive at about 3 a.m. today, grabbed her revolver and was confronted by a man in her hallway holding a small flashlight.
The woman fired three shots at the intruder, "who then ran screaming from the residence," according to a police news release.
Police arrived and found blood on the floor near where the woman shot at the intruder. A window air conditioning unit had been removed from a back window to allow access into the home, police said.
Within minutes of the shooting, Michael Oneal Bynum, 18, returned to his home at 424 11th Ave. - less than 200 yards from the home that was broken into - suffering from a gunshot wound to the abdomen, police said.
I don't mean to sound cold. It obviously was not a good outcome for the young man, who obviously was headed down the wrong path. That's unfortunate. But, it was a much better outcome than if the lady had been robbed, or, even worse, injured or killed. When it comes down to a perpetrator of a crime vs. an innocent victim, I'm always going to be more pleased if the victim comes out ahead.
