This is a blog for the residents of Greater Decatur, which I roughly define as a circle ten miles in diameter centered on the old DeKalb Courthouse in Decatur, GA. (The further people live from downtown Decatur, the less affinity they will feel toward it, but many of them will still come to Decatur sometimes to dine, drink, shop, and attend events.) This blog deals with local, metro, state, national, and world matters which, in my opinion, should be of interest to people living in this circle.

The format is what Typepad calls a "micro blog." It easily interacts with Twitter and Facebook, the leading social media services.

SWAT standoff on S. Candler Thursday AM

@writterchad reports a SWAT team standoff at a house on S. Candler in Decatur. He says traffic is being directed onto Midway Road.

Jason Sweet opening at The Seen Gallery tonight

Jason Sweet earned his BA in Sculpture from the University of Northern Iowa and his MFA in Sculpture from the University of Illinois in Urbana Champaign. He has also worked as an apprentice to sculptors Tom Stancliffe and Preston Jackson.

Jason presents his work in a variety of venues and mediums. He creates sculpture, paintings, drawings, and is active in performance art. Within those venues one will find work that may deal with strictly nonobjective formal aesthetics or work that is created for strictly conceptual purposes. He has produced a number of public art commissions such as for The Waterloo Grout Museum in Waterloo, IA, and for Utoy Creek Water Reclamation Center for the city of Atlanta.

He says of his work, "In all the work I create I try to find a balance, which at times is an area of ambiguity, between contrasting elements.... sculptural yet flat, symmetrical yet asymmetrical."

The Seen Gallery at 415 Church St. is holding an opening for some new work from 7 to 10 pm tonight.
