CityTownInfo provides a good overview of Decatur.
GENDER AND AGE
Women outnumber men by a wide margin in Decatur, 57.6% to 42.4%. Among non-seniors, the difference is most dramatic in the 20-40 range. And, since women outlive men on average, there are over twice as many women over 60 as men.
The median age for both genders is slightly older than the average for the state.
We don't think about ethnicity much these days. We're more concerned with crime rates, house and yard maintenance, and noise levels; regardless of race, creed, sexual preference, political leanings, or whatever. By law, and by our desires, anyone who is legally in the US and shouldn't be in jail can live in Decatur Heights.
But, just for the record, here are the latest available ethnicity stats for Decatur, as compared to the City of Atlanta, from the 2000 Census:

It's interesting to note that the black/white ratio for Decatur is very close to the reverse of the City of Atlanta. It would be interesting to see the trend over the past 60 years. (That will have to be a future project, as time allows.)
Decatur's age distribution is fairly typical.
Senior citizens, who represent about 1/3 of the city's population, are being economically strained by rising Decatur tax rates, compounded by rising property values (which are several times higher than they were when long-time residents purchased their homes). The City of Decatur recognizes this, and is trying to address it by given Seniors some tax breaks.
Ethnicity stats are not kept for Decatur Heights, but, just from observing, it appears to be predominantly (maybe as high as 90%) white and descendants of people who have been Americans for multiple generations.
Decatur Heights residents welcome anyone who maintains their house and yard (thereby not detracting from the neighborhood appearance and our property values), doesn't make higher than average noise, and is not involved in crime (thus contributing to our low crime rate).
We want Decatur Heights to be a great place to live and raise our kids, and welcome anyone who shares those goals.
