The Decatur Heights Neighborhood Association sent out an e-mail on 8/8/2010.
It's in the continuation.
Even I didn't know Sycamore Drive was once an airstrip. It was probably well before when I was born.
Decatur Heights Neighborhood Association Update
The Ice Cream Social was a tremendous success. David Scharf, Alan and Stephanie Smith, Natalie Snedden and Carol Langley deserve a special thank you. In addition, Grace Ann and Herb Young provided great brownie treats and the day was highlighted by the music of Irish fiddler and neighbor Mora Nelligan. We are also especially grateful to the Church at Decatur Heights for hosting the event – over 70 folks had multiple bowls of homemade and regular ice cream.
NEDS Garden Group: Calling All Gardners
The Northeast Decatur Growing Community will meet Tuesday evening at 7:00pm at the Church at Decatur Heights. Of course, the group is in the planning and build out phase as it is the height of summer. Get in on the ground floor of this exciting new group. Meetings will be held the second Tuesday of each month at the church. This month the group will finalize the design plans for the Garden & Park to be developed on the Church's backyard green space. Committees are now being organized to tackle the projects & handle general “NED”
assignments.
Did You Know?
Sycamore Drive was a air runway many years ago. According to Peggy Merriss, Decatur’s City Manager, Sycamore Drive served as a runway for small planes before it was developed with homes.
Decatur Arts Alive
Day of Performing Arts, Just for the Family - Decatur Arts Live!, August 21, 10am-2 pm
Flamenco dancers, jugglers, puppets, and comedians will be just some of the fun and entertainment for children and adults alike at Glennwood Academy, as they host Decatur Arts Live on August 21, from 10:00am – 2:00pm. The event is a joint venture between the Glennwood PTO and Young Audiences, Woodruff Arts Center (YAWAC). It is designed to support the Cultural Arts enrichment program at Glennwood and to showcase the diversity of professional artists working with Young Audiences.
The fun begins at 10:00 am as attendees rotate through a schedule of simultaneous performances, hands-on activities, and workshops. Families can enjoy performances from YAWAC artists such as storyteller Andy Offutt Irwin, Kathy Bennett (aka "Queen Glitter",) sculptor Jeff Mather, and Greg Roth (aka "Mr. Greg.") Guests will listen to live musical performances and may speak one-on-one with artists about their craft. The event is appropriate for children aged pre-K through fifth grade and is open to the public. The school café will serve family-friendly snacks and lunch.
Tickets purchased in advance are $10 for adults, $5 for kids, or $20 per family. If purchased the day of the event, tickets will be $15 for adults, $8 for kids, or $25 per family. You may purchase tickets in advance at http://www.GlennwoodPTO.org. Please support this local fundraiser!
The Glennwood PTO is hosting Decatur Arts Live, and all funds raised by Decatur Arts Live will support educational arts programs at Glennwood Academy.
Glennwood is the first school in the Atlanta metro-area to partner with Young Audiences for an event of this type. It is the perfect event to complement and support the Arts program at Glennwood. They are planning for this to be the signature annual fundraising event for the 4/5 grade Academy when it moves to the new 5th Avenue site in the fall of 2011.
Sponsorship opportunities for the 2010 Decatur Arts Live event are still available. For more information go to www.GlennwoodPTO.org ; or contact Nia Schooler at (404) 759-1210 or niaschooler@comcast.net .
