Sparking wire sets limb afire on Ridgeland Ave.

This started around 9AM.

DFD responded very rapidly, but the sparking had already stopped by then.

A Georgia Power truck showed up about 30 minutes later.

The Sycamore/Ridgeland intersection got rather crowded, with the gas line crews already working there. 

Doves of peace in Decatur Heights

These two baby doves were born (hatched) on Father's Day. They reside with their proud parents, Angel and Angela, at the Peer Support & Wellness Center at 444 Sycamore Drive.

Doves have traditionally been a symbol of peace. May these babies represent the birth of a peaceful coexistence between the center and the neighborhood.

Thanks to Jayme for a warm reception as I visited the Center for the first time.

NE Decatur Garden Club organization meeting Tuesday 7PM

 

The NE Decatur Garden Club will hold its organization meeting at 7PM Tuesday at the Church at 735 Sycamore Drive. 

Anyone interested is welcome. Those living east of Clairmont and north of the railroad in Decatur or beyond in incorporated DeKalb or even Avondale, Scottdale, and Clarkton) are welcome.

Traditonally, garden clubs have been reserved to the upper crust who could afford fancy flower gardens and professional landscaping. This garden club will be happy to include that element, but also includes those who just want to grow a few tomatoes.

Open letter from Deanne re. traffic calming meeting

Hi folks!

It was very energizing to have so many neighbors show up for Thursday's Sycamore Drive Traffic Calming Meeting! It shows that folks are indeed interested in being involved in revitalizing our neighborhood. The enthusiastic feedback received since has been wonderful!

Peggy Merriss & David Junger have the roundtables notes link. David also compiled his own list of things he wants to further review. Of course it will take a few weeks for them to categorize our list of proposed traffic & safety calming solutions into: “Can DO!” & “Not Feasible.” They'll get back to us & then we'll share it with y'all in another informal gathering.

It was terrific to have some of our Dekalb/ Sycamore Drive neighbors in attendance. We look forward to having y'all join us at future meetings! As the DHNA transportation committee has worked with our Dekalb officials on the process for getting stop signs for that section of Sycamore Drive, we'll leave it to them to continue that project. The DHNA is welcome to share any updates here on the blog. (* My apologies to the Dekalb/Sycamore Drive folks who came specifically to learn of the next steps on the stop signs project. We'll get that information to y'all just as soon as it is made known. )

Again, it's wonderful to hear all of the possibilities for our neighborhood being discussed throughout Decatur Heights! Let's keep all the great ideas & positive energy flowing!

Good traffic calming meeting last night

About 30 showed up for the traffic calming meeting at the Church in Decatur Heights last night.

Some were from Sycamore Ridge, unincorporated DeKalb north of the Decatur City limits, and even other parts of Decatur and the county.

Decatur City Manager Peggy Merriss and Assistant City Manager David Junger were on hand to review previous improvements and plans in the City's Transportation Plan. 

 

They also heard first hand a number of ideas which emerged the group as a whole and from the five roundtable groups. A complete listing will be forwarded to them. They've asked for a few weeks to respond on what can be done when.

Annie reviewed previous efforts and accomplishments, supported by a number of handouts.

We didn't formally process the report outs from the roundtable groups to develop a group consensus top five list, but a number of common themes emerged.

UPDATE: Below the fold you'll find report outs from the six rountable breakout groups, images of which have been e-mailed to David Junger. If you would like to lobby for a suggestion, please do so in a comment. 

If you could not attend the meeting, and have an idea not mentioned, please comment on that as well. There's no reason the discussion cannot continue during the month or so while the city is still considering what it can do when.

Proposed Sycamore Dr lane marking for 30' and 40' sections

Sycamore Drive can logically be divided into six sections. The first two, from Ponce to Pinehurst, are about 40' wide (give or take a foot or two). These sections can support two 11' traffic lanes and 8' parking lanes on both sides of the street.  The next three are about 30' wide and can support two 11' traffic lanes and one parking lane, which probably should be on the east side, since that is where the Church and the Suburban school are.  The last section is mostly in front of DeKalb Medical, and is probably optimized as is.
