Those of us over 50 were taught what was probably a simplistic story of the original Thanksgiving. Revisionist history would have us believe all sorts of crazy things. Paul Krugman wrote some BS on this in the NY Slimes yesterday.
The TRUE story can be found in a history written by the governor of the colony, which can be read here. Since it's long winded and written in Old English, which is painful to read, I know few reading this are going to get very far into it, if they even start.
So, here's a telling of the key learning by Jerry Bowyer. He's an economic expert. His site is Bowyer Briefing. He was interviewed by Rusty Humphries on WGST 640AM Atlanta yesterday afternoon. [He's on 3-6PM EST. Enter keyword "Rusty" at the link.] Click on the bar below to listen to the short recording. [I apologize for missing the first few minutes, where he described the original plan to have common gardens shared by the community.]
The documented, indesputable TRUTH is early attempts at socialism failed. When the colony switched over to capitalism, it thrived, and shared its bounty with the Native Americans.
If you don't believe what Bowyer says, you'll have to buckle down and do your homework by reading through William Bradford's original account, which is the primary source of information. Have fun. Please report back in the comments if you find any discrepany in Bowyer's account.
