The next shuttle will take up the laser gun.
We'll then be as prepared as is humanly possible to defend the earth from the invading aliens.
It may appear the President is castrating NASA and impeding human space flight, but he is actually correctly prioritizing resources to deal with threats of which we cannot be informed, for national security reasons. (It's the only logical explanation, really.)
Keep the faith. He's using the force.
