Churches review security plans following Colorado shootings

Two separate shootings at Colorado religious centers have raised the once-unthinkable question: Just how secure are you at local places of worship?

Police are trying to figure out if the two shootings that left six people dead are connected.

Early Sunday, a man began shooting after entering the Mission Center in Arvada, Colorado.

Thirteen hours later, 70 miles away, a gunman was shot and killed by a security guard after he opened fire in the parking lot of New Life Church in Colorado Springs.

The shooting has many area churches reviewing their security plans.

St. Peter in Chains Cathedral, in Downtown Cincinnati, and many other churches have off-duty police officers stationed inside and outside the church during service.

What's the world coming to when we have to worry about security in church services?

Such shootings are usually be deranged or depressed people who just might do anything, anywhere.

Click on this WGST 640 link and the first link in the upper right (as of this posting) to hear a Texas man call 911 because his neighbor's house is being robbed, then go out and shoot one of them in the yard.

A-C-E doesn't advise this, but it is good, ole-fashioned Texas justice. It's how neighbors used to take care of each other and their property. Potential robbers were deterred by knowing they couldn't count on having time before the cops arrived.

That story ends a lot better than this one.

Thug works without bullets, would-be victim doesn't

A robbery and crime spree aided by an unloaded gun came to an abrubt halt late Thursday when the gunman met more than his match: a gun with bullets.

Four young people, aged 17-20, started their crime spree (probably just for kicks) around 8:40PM. They had already robbed one young man and attempted a carjacking when they saw a 53-year-old man at a Detroit car wash and tried to carjack him. Charles Parker Jr., 18, approached with an unloaded .22 cal. handgun and the other wielded a baseball bat, police said. That's when the man washing his car drew his 9mm handgun and fired, striking Parker. Parker's alleged accomplices took him to Sinai-Grace Hospital where he was pronounced DOA.

After the shooting, police questioned the man and released him (returning his gun), noting that he had a valid concealed weapons permit and declaring it a case of self defense.
