Sheriff Ralph Davis says the officer was
cleaning the gun after using it the day before at the shooting range.
The officer thought he had cleared all the bullets out of the gun, but
when he pulled the trigger to release the slide, the gun fired and hit
him in the hand.

This just doesn't seem like good firearm design, but one should never aim the barrel of a firearm at any living or valuable thing anyway, except when one intends to incapacitate/kill or damage/destroy it.
