Return of the Immigration Bill

Like JH @ RightWingNews said back in May, this bill is going to be harder to kill than Jason Voorhees. Time compares it the Terminator.

Senate leaders on Thursday night announced a deal that breathes life into the bipartisan immigration bill that appeared to be stalled just days ago.

The deal, which would bring the legislation back to the floor as early as next week, came as a bipartisan group of negotiators worked through Thursday to overcome a procedural hurdle that led Democratic leader Harry Reid of Nevada to pull the bill from the floor last week. Reid, along with Republican leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, agreed Thursday to bring the bill to the floor after the Senate finishes its work on energy legislation.

“We met this evening with several of the senators involved in the immigration bill negotiations,” Reid and McConnell said in a joint statement. “Based on that discussion, the immigration bill will return to the Senate floor after completion of the energy bill.”

“We’re standing in front of a train, there’s no doubt about it,” said Jim DeMint, R-S.C., a leader of the group of Republicans trying to kill the bill.

The breakthrough came hours after President Bush called for $4.4 billion in border security spending to be added to the bill — an effort to win over those who want to enforce current laws before providing a path to legalization for illegal immigrants.

DeMint said Bush’s proposal “may give enough people cover to vote for the bill.”

The Hill  CQ Today  Time

EM @ Captain's Quarters has very little trust in the border security promises, given past history. A commenter there says: "Don't tire folks... Their plan is simple, and based entirely upon history regarding the American voter; let them blow off steam and this will quite down, then we will bring the bill back and throw a few meaningless carrots at the people; the media will provide cover with 24/7 propaganda and the people will go back to their personal business while we wrap up this deal..."

Do the majority of Americans really want this bill? DS @ RCP takes a hard look at the reported poll results.

Keep calling and FAXing, saying we want a proven implementation of border security before we deal with the illegal immigrants already here (assuming you agree). See how in the continuation.

From RightWingNews:

#1) Pick up the phone and call your home state senators. You can get the numbers and/or email addresses of your home state senators here.

#2) Call the National Republican Senatorial Committee at (202) 675-6000 and let them know that you will not support the reelection of any senator in 2008 who votes for the amnesty bill in the Senate.

#3) Call the Republican National Committee at (202) 863-8500 (option 1) and let them know you will not support any candidate in 2008 who votes for the amnesty bill in the Senate.

#4) Call, email, or fax Mitch McConnell's office at (202) 224-2541 and tell them that you expect him to resign as Senate Minority Leader if this bill passes.

#5) Call, email, or fax Trent Lott's office at (202) 224-6253 and tell them that you expect him to resign as Minority Whip if this bill passes.

Again, if you don't want to call them, email them or fax them. But also remember to be POLITE, but firm.
