As of this posting the death toll from the shootings at Virginia Tech is at 31, with at least 21 (probably many more) injured. That number has grown during the day, and will probably be adjusted yet again. (Watch the live news for the latest.) [AP]
This eclipses the 1966 Univ. of Texas Tower (16 dead) and 1999 Columbine (12 dead) school shootings by about 2X. The previous deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history was in Killeen, Texas, in 1991, when George Hennard drove his pickup into a Luby's Cafeteria and shot 23 people to death, then himself.
Reports are the lone gunman had only two pistols (and apparently a number of magazines).
Buckethead @ The Minister of Perfidy notes A bill that would have given college students and employees the right to carry handguns on campus died with nary a shot being fired in the General Assembly.
From the linked report:
Virginia Tech spokesman Larry Hincker was happy to hear the bill was defeated. “I’m sure the university community is appreciative of the General Assembly’s actions because this will help parents, students, faculty and visitors feel safe on our campus.”
