Photos of mortar near Najaf shrine

1115Z WED 25AUG04. CentCom.

Aerial photos show a mortar position just outside the Najaf shrine.

Neal Boortz is of the opinion a shrine remains a shrine as long as it is used as a shrine, but ceases to be a shrine when it is used to house troops, weapons, and ammunition. Makes sense to me, but I doubt the Iraqis would see it that way.

I still say tear gas 'em. It's probably too late to capture al-Sadr, however, as he's not been seen in days, and has most likely already high tailed it out of there.
