Karl Zinsmeister, the J.B. Fuqua fellow at the American Enterprise Institute, followed the 82nd Airborne from the beginning of March until the first week of April 2003 to record the opening of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Here's a review by Jonathan Butcher (Research Assistant in Domestic Policy at The Heritage Foundation) at www.townhall.com.
Well into the book, Zinsmeister writes:
"Thank you. For no sleep at all--and conceivably not even another sweet day of life--would accrue to me...if it wasn't for a handful of tough men willing to force themselves awake all night...They are literally the only reason that I (and, at longer range, you and the rest of America) can drift off peacefully when slumber beckons. Thanks, guys."
That's not the way I talk nor write, but it is the way I think.
